A feeling of optimism surrounded the first day of the season for the Sheffield Lancers, who had come close to breaking their duck at the end of their first season and were determined to go the extra step and secure their first win in their first game of the season against the newly formed Nottingham Hoods.
The lancers started the game in a quick fashion scoring in just 59 seconds when Adam Cooper opened his account for the season going top shelf on Russell Smith in the Hoods goal.
At 5:05 in the 1st period Jaret Rose scored his first of the game firing a big snap shot to make it 2-0 on the power play when Turek was called for Slashing. Nottingham Hoods scored their first ever goal in the league with one second left on the clock in the 1st period and it was the captain Francois Gallant who finished up high on Daniel Croskell in the Lancers goal to bring the home side within one at the 1st period break who also had a goal chalked off for an offside decision.
Going to the second period the Lancers took back their two goal lead at 13:53 when Aiden Paget scored his 1st of the game from the slot and then just a minute later at 14:59 when Jaret Rose received a pass from Newman from in front of his own goal and Rose timed his finish to perfection to give the Lancers a 4-1 lead.
James Duffy pulled a second goal back for the Hoods at 17:54 when he fired a snap shot from the right hand side of goal that found its way through the pads of Croskell. Lancer’s Michael Henderson making his debut was sent to sit for two minutes for checking a Hoods player but Aiden Paget went on to score a short-handed goal timed at 22:06 to make it 5-2 and that started a quick succession of goal for the visitors.
It was 6-2 at the 22:45 mark when Aaron Bowler finished at the high slot mark over the blocker off Smith assisted by Rose. Jaret Rose then completed his hat-trick in the final minute of the 2nd period timed at 23:18 and the home side then had a mountain to climb as the Lancers took a 7-2 lead into the second period break.
The Hoods didn’t give up in the third period though when they tried to mount a comeback and at 29:14 James Duffy was fed in for his second of the game and placed his shot high over the blocker off Croskell to make it 7-4. Sebastian Turek made it 7-5 at the 30:25 mark when he fired a big slap shot past Croskell who didn’t have a clue till the Hoods player were celebrating. The home side finished of the scoring when again Sebastian Turek fired a second slap shot to make it 7-5 at 34:31 and that prompted Lancers head coach David Grant to call a time to calm his players, but the visitors hung on to secure their first victory of the season 7-5.
