Saturday 6th October marks the first BHUK competition for the Sheffield Knights for the 2018/19 season, the Tier 3 Autumn National Qualifiers.
Last year, the Knights battled hard in the Autumn national qualifiers and claimed victory following a final matchup with the Nottingham Titans. The Knights were then promoted to Tier 2 and fought to earn a spot in the Tier 2 National Finals.
For the upcoming 2018/19 season, the decision was made to enter a second Knights nationals squad, giving the club teams in both Tier 2 and Tier 3 for nationals competition. The upcoming Tier 3 Autumn Nationals Qualifier not only marks the start of BHUK competition for the new season, but also marks the first outing for the Lancers Nationals side.
The Lancers nationals squad will head to Simply Skate, Rotherham on Saturday to take on Glasgow Phoenix, Shaw Billionaires, Hull River Kings, Nottingham Wolverines and Sheffield Steelers BHC C, and will be hungry to earn another victory in the Autumn Qualifiers.
“Last year’s nationals tournament started about as well as it could have for us” said head coach David Grant. “We all fought hard to get the results we needed and never got ahead of ourselves, taking each game as it came. Securing a win in the Autumn Qualifiers is a huge start to the season, and would give us the strength and confidence going into both future nationals qualifiers and into league games. Myself, Ash and Joe [assistant coaches] believe that we have the squad to replicate last season’s early success and we know each player in the squad has the ability and determination to do so.”
The Lancers nationals side will be led by captain Matty Lanchester, who was appointed as the squad captain at the start of the 2018/19 season. “Matty throws his body on the line every game, blocking heavy shots without even hesitating” Grant said. “We have every confidence that Matty will lead the squad from the back, that he will put everything on the line for the team, and that he will do everything that he can to push the team to a win”.
